Five Ways to Bring Joy Back to Your Life
Have you ever felt a distinct lack of fun in your life? Do the days seem to pass by in much the same, uneventful way - get up, go to work, come home, switch your brain off for a few hours then go to bed, only to do it all over again in the morning?
If you feel like you’re stuck on a neverending carousel of deadlines, bills, and sinks filled with dirty dishes, you’re in need of a serious joy makeover!
What does it mean to make room for joy? Sure, whilst it goes without saying that no amount of joyfulness can ever get you out of having to pay your taxes or go to work each day, it can be the difference between “Ugh, I can’t wait for this day to be over” and “I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for me today!”. Making room for joy means learning to seek out moments of magic, no matter how small or how brief, wherever we can.
To help bring back that spark of happy, heartfelt joy into your life, try your hand at these five tips below!
1. Make A List of Things That Fill You With Joy
Think back to the last time your stomach hurt from laughing too much and aim to recapture that feeling as often as possible. Make a list of anything and everything, big or small, that brings joy to your life, whether it’s watching a favorite comedian’s stand-up, spending time with a close friend, or even just making your favorite breakfast in the morning.
Once you’ve written your list, think of ways you can incorporate the things you’ve included into your everyday routine. It might be wildly impractical to buy tickets to watch your favorite comedian every single week, but there’s nothing stopping you from listening to their routine in the car on your way to work. Similarly, you can pencil in a weekly coffee-and-catch-up date with your close friend - for the sake of practicality, you can even make it a Zoom date! Even just waking up ten minutes earlier each day so you have time to make your favorite breakfast means that you’re able to start your day with a smile on your face.
2. Make a Playlist Filled With Songs That Get Your Toes Tapping
There’s nothing quite like singing along to your favorite song to make you feel truly joyful. You don’t even need to be able to hold a tune - just turn up the music and don’t be afraid to sing out loud!
Put together a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs and write down the lyrics that make you smile. Play it anytime you need to shake off the doldrums and have a little fun. You can even come up with silly dance routines too because just like the old saying goes, dance like no one’s watching!
3. Find Inspiration in Nature
Nature is a treat for the senses. From colorful flowers to the sounds of leaves rustling and birds singing, reconnecting with nature can be one of the easiest ways to invite more joy into your life. Wake up early and take some time to peacefully watch the sunrise. Research scenic nature trails near you and spend an afternoon hiking. There’s so much beauty and magic to be found in the natural world around you, so set aside the time to see it.
4. Embrace Your Inner Child
With their vast imaginations and ability to turn almost anything into a game, it seems that joy comes so effortlessly to children. Make a list of the activities you used to enjoy when you were a child - perhaps you liked to draw cartoon characters, create dramatic plays for your stuffed animals to act out, or get your hands dirty with any manner of creative crafts. Then, paying no attention to how “silly” or “immature” these activities may be, set aside an afternoon where you can be free to reconnect with your Inner Child and enjoy some good, old-fashioned play time.
5. Use Feng Shui For a Home Filled With Joy
There are a number of things you can do in your home to help attract more joy into your life. In Diamond Feng Shui, the color to attract joy is peach, so add peach-colored items in the West area of your bedroom, living room, and workspace in the form of candles, artwork, and soft furnishings.
Hang crystals by your windows so that they create rainbows across your walls whenever the sun comes out. Display photos of you with your family and friends that show you all happy and smiling. Make sure to have plenty of soft lighting in each room, and consider placing lamps in each of the four corners to banish any shadowy areas. Finally, avoid having too many dark colors in your living room or bedroom and instead focus on cheerful, colorful hues and images.
