Three Things to Do (and Three Things Not to Do!) to Ensure a Lucky Chinese New Year

2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit according to the Chinese astrology calendar. Celebrated as a 15-day festival, the Chinese New Year starts on Sunday 22nd January, 2023 and finishes on Sunday 5th February, 2023. During this time, there are many traditions followed that help to ensure good luck and fortune for the upcoming year, and there are many things you’ll need to avoid doing too!

Three Things to Do for Luck

  1. On January 22nd, burn sandalwood incense and ring a Tibetan bell. Recite prayers or mantras to bring positive energy to your home.

  2. Create a “Tray of Togetherness” to share with your family and loved ones. Simply fill a tray with eight different types of snacks. You can place on it: pecan nuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, almonds, peach kernels, plums, apricots, walnuts, and sweets. All these symbolize abundance and prosperity.

  3. It’s always good luck to wear something new for a celebration, but it’s especially true for the Chinese New Year. If you can’t get a new outfit, try a new accessory like a pair of earrings or a shawl. Ensure that your outfit doesn’t require any repairs and is free from holes or broken fastenings. For an added boost of prosperity, include something red in your outfit.

… And Three Things to Avoid

  1. Avoid cleaning your home during the New Year festival since you’ll be sweeping away all the good luck. Similarly, it’s bad luck to shower, wash your hair, or do laundry on January 22nd since doing so will wash away all your good fortune for the year.

  2. Avoid breaking any glass or ceramic items. If you do break something by accident, wrap the fragments in red paper and recite a positive affirmation to attract peace and harmony. Only after February 5th can you dispose of the fragments.

  3. Since this is a time for compassion, do not demand repayment for any outstanding debts or else it will bring bad luck to all the parties involved. You can ask for it after February 5th. Similarly, avoid borrowing money during the New Year festival or else you will end up needing to borrow money throughout the whole year.
